Google offers around 4,000 categories and updates them regularly. This means you have lots of specific options, which helps match your business to the right searches. However, it can be overwhelming to choose one main category and up to nine secondary ones.
Take vets as an example. Our data identified 33,336 GBP profiles. They are categorized into specific areas, such as “Veterinarian,” “Animal hospital,” “Veterinary care,” and “Emergency veterinarian service.” This matters most in urgent situations. If an emergency vet skips “Emergency veterinarian service” as primary or secondary, they miss out on “emergency vet near me” searches. Google favors exact matches. A generic “Veterinarian” label could push them down, costing high-value clients. GBP’s depth is a lifeline for niche services.
Yelp: Reviews Rule, But Categories Are Too Broad
Yelp excels in reviews and serves as a key local listing. We analyzed approximately 45,000 locations in the United States, which is less than half of GBP’s data set. Yelp’s categories are wider, lumping things together.
Veterinarians, for instance, fall under two categories: “Veterinarian” (9,075 spots) and “Emergency Pet Hospital” (171 spots), unlike GBP’s splits. Services like pet sitting are differentiated from dog walkers with “Pet Sitters” (7,639 spots) and “Dog Walkers” (3,579 spots), ignoring differences between cat sitters and forcing a business to primarily be a Dog Walker or a Pet Sitter.
To work around this, niche businesses rely on detailed descriptions, sharp photos, and reviews that incorporate targeted keywords, such as “certified cat sitter.” These help Yelp’s search spot relevance despite broad categories. For example, Happy Cat Hotel, a specialized cat boarding facility in Windsor, Connecticut, successfully optimized its Yelp listing by using the category “Pet Sitters” and including detailed descriptions such as “Luxury Cat Hotel” and “feline-only” They also uploaded high-quality images of their cat play areas and encouraged customers to mention specific experiences in their reviews, such as ” they were happy & healthy!
